the big game and the super bowl

Do you ever wonder why some commercials refer to Sunday's football game as the "big game" and some commercials refer to it as the "Super Bowl?"

as you can see above, Best Buy is not an "official" NFL sponsor

It all comes down to money, and who pays to be an "official" sponsor of the NFL.  You'll see plenty of beer commercials for the football game on Sunday, but only Anheuser-Busch, which is paying the NFL $1.2B over the next 6 years to be the official sponsor can utter the phrase "Super Bowl" in their advertisements.  By being an official sponsor, Anheuser-Busch (think Budweiser and Bud Light) can also use NFL images and trademarks that other companies that can't.

Here are some official sponsors:

Pizza - Papa John's
Soda - Pepsi
Shipper - FedEx
Bank - Bank of America
Wireless Provider - Sprint
Credit Card - Visa

As you can see, the list can go on and on.....

  1. Well, that makes sense. I guess my grocery store is not an official sponsor, because they are urging me to buy food for the "big game."
